He got his cane and a basket, and put a sack of sardines into it. Then the three set out with sandwiches Jill had made at the last minute, and a thermos of coffee. Driss sat on a rock that jutted out above the sea, and they sat beside him in the sun.

Then he took out the sardines and began to grind them up and mix them with sand, into a mass. He tossed it in pellets into the water. He got his fishing rod ready, and washed his hands in the water of a pool on the top of the rock.

How are you going to fish? Jill asked him.

Right now I'm going to smoke some kif, he said. They'll begin to smell it pretty soon, and by the time I'm through smoking they'll be down there.

They laughed. When he had finished one pipe, he got up and took the rod in his hands and baited the hook with a piece of sardine. He cast the line into the ocean. Immediately he pulled in a chargo that weighed three pounds. He threw it onto the rock beside them. Then he fished until he had caught two more of the same size.

That's all we need, he said. That's enough fishing. We'll cook each fish in a different way and have plenty.

The wind was blowing, and the sun had been hidden by clouds so they pulled their clothing around them.

Let's start for home right now, said Mrs. Watkins.

It was five o'clock in the afternoon.

They walked back to the house. The women went to their rooms and rested while Driss began to prepare the fish. He decided to have one baked with onions, lemons and raisins, to fry another, and grill the third over charcoal. When he had the sauces and the salad on the table Jill and her mother came in and sat down.

It's magnificent fish, said Mrs. Watkins. And you've cooked it perfectly. It still has the taste of the sea in it.

When they had eaten they went into the sala, and Driss inquired what they wanted to drink.

What I want is a cup of tea with lemon in it, said Mrs. Watkins.

I'll make a big pot of it, he said. People like me who smoke kif say: A little lemon juice will make you blink your eyes.

What does that mean?

Why, it means that lemon in the tea will make you close your eyes. Just what it says.
